Dolpo Phoksundo Trek is situated in the far west, northern parts of Nepal in Shey Phoksundo National Park in Dolpa district which joins to China Tibet on the north.

The main trekking attraction of this route presents Phoksundo Lake at an altitude of 3611m in turquoise lies down the deepest lake in Nepal. This trekking area of trails offers the opportunity to see flora and fauna of High Himalayas. The path exhibits beautiful forest of blue pine, black juniper, oak, cedar, and two high passes are Numa La (5290m) and Baga La (5170m) covered with white snow. Under a blue sky, valley views, grassy lands, icy waterfalls, eroded brown sparkly peaks, and snowcapped mountains enchant our day to day trekking destination. The trekking routes present to experience off the beaten track and village people who are similar to Tibetan. Their faith in Buddhist Bon, lifestyle, culture and customs are very deeply influenced by Tibetan. Day to day trials is often seen studded with chortens mani walls, monasteries, and colorful Buddhist prayer flags. This region is isolated and entirely cut off from development.

To access Phoksundo Lake Trek fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj to Dunai (2370m). Nepalgunj is a plain Terai area. The area of the Dolpo Phoksundo Lake trek rewards with exotic culture, houses, and scenery quite different from that found elsewhere in Nepal. We walk on some ridges range from 3800m to 5290m high while it is an opportunity to glimpse of yaks, blue sheep, marmot, and other several mountain homeland animals and birds. The trail to Phoksundo Lake includes walking up and down through forests and isolated villages and leads to a high view, hilltop which proffers impressive mountains, valleys, and traditional villages with farming.

This trek provides with an entire wilderness with the full beauty of nature trail. By reason of camping trek, very few trekkers visit this region. The basic tea house is possible for five days from Dunai to Phoksundo Lake to Dunai. Unique flora and fauna are important with rare and vulnerable species. Wilderness camping trekking anti-clockwise route ranges from 2150m to 5290m Numa La Pass and Baga La Pass 5175m from the sea level that again joins at the end at 2150m forms a complete highland circle trek.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrival at Kathmandu International Airport transfer to your hotel. A short briefing is given about your trekking route. It is your choice whether you like to visit nearby sanctuaries or rest at the hotel.

Day 02: Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Dunai (2150m) (35min)

Day 05: Dunai to Tarakot (2550m) (5-6hrs)

The first day of the trek starts following along the Bheri River to the south direction leads towards Lawan a police checkpoint. We pass through fields then a short up and down pleasant trail to the village of Tarakot inhabitants are Magar ethnic.

Day 06: Tarakot to Laini (3200m) (6-7hrs)

The gradual climbing path passes farming fields, then turns to the south that meets Yalkot Khola is crossed by a bridge. Now we continue heading up to by exhibiting forest and a certain further descending point. While following downed trail ends in front of the bridge, there is a police check post to register Dolpo and area permit. Stepping forward to the remote route while that has a side trip to visit an old monastery Sandul Gompa then we get back the main path that enters the rocky steep gorge to Laini has a nice campsite. Our Sherpas set up the tent to the waterfall view side.

Day 07: Laini to Nawarpani (3550m) (max. 5hrs)

Beyond Laini unexpected climbing straight up about an hour beats to a pass and then a comfortable trail leads through the scary deep gorge. Again, we dip to a waterfall section to ascend a ridge from the ridge direct down to Chyugur Khola. Crossing a river, the next is a streamside and then forward meet huts which serve hot drinks and noodles. The further trek is to cross again a suspension bridge then turn to the right side bank of the river leads to Nawarpani is a location station for mule, donkeys and horses use as transportation.

Day 08: Nawarpani to Dho Tarap (4050m)(max. 6hrs)

Today’s trek encounters a large number of bridges by crossing and recrossing the river. As usual, time to start trek leaving behind Nawarpani crosses a bridge and again another bridge is crossed to Taltole and beyond it, the trail rises up past a chorten in Sarkam was a border post once in time between Nepal and China. Again cross a bridge climbing slope path passes religious walls and chortens and then descends to a rocky section to further gently heading up to the village of Lang. Continue smooth rises trail at Dho Tarap has nice camping.

Day 09: Acclimatization in Dho Tarap

Almost and all about a week hard following the up and down trails make us overtired so we need a short rest. Another true fact is it is ideal to acclimatize a day at 4050m which helps us to do the top of the Numa La Pass without altitude problem. A day is easily passed by visiting the village of Tibetan ethnic community, exotic houses, well planted traditional farming of wheat, barley and surrounding very old monasteries with beautiful Buddhist art. It is a big village concludes about half a dozen famous monasteries which are more than a thousand years.

Day 10: Dho Tarap to Numa La Base Camp (4425m) (max. 4hrs)

Day six explores several villages and monasteries along the trail. Heading to the west side passing monasteries, a school, and a kani then continue to Gakar village where Phurba Gompa is interesting to visit. The next village encounters Chu Magar where people run tea houses. One after the past bridges and villages, we arrive at Mando is a trail split junction. We pick up the way to Jampa Lhakhang that directs up to Num La Base Camp.

Day 11: Numa La Base Camp to Pelung Tang (4450m) (max. 4hrs)

Today is a long day walk and the highest altitude climbing path Numa La Pass. Early in the morning set for the pass to avoid wind, snowfall in the afternoon. Starting trek flowing up the steep trail snowy path to a chorten and continue walking up meets a ridge from this section enters to glacier part that leads on top of Numa La Pass, about three hours from Pelung Tang. Due to a higher elevation, oxygen level low gets you tired. The pass offers views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, (8172m) (Kanjirowa, Shey Shikhar (6119m) and Churen Himal. Congratulating each other on being the highest point, we soar down on scree loose and rocky path to floor of the valley. The trail heads down encounters streams, further descent on the bank of Gyambo Khola is followed down to Pelung Tang is situated on grassy flat land.

Day 12: Pelung Tang to Dajok Tang ((4100m) (max. 6hrs)

Today’s destination is to Dajok Tang. To access there another high pass Baga La (5150m) must be crossed. Start following up the path enters to a meadow further walk to a ridge is with a chorten. Continue climbing up the trail along the cairns reaches on top of the Baga La where a few moments for rest and looking at views, we descend on scree loss and rocky path enters into a flat valley area. Beyond the trail passes streams and straight down to Dajok Tang which offers beautiful waterfalls and one of the best scenery exposes camping place. From here walk down to the waterfall, across the valley, and chortens and village of Ringmo. The next stage is blue, calm under the sky surrounded bu greenery shrubs and plants is Phoksundo Lake.

Day 13: Dajok Tang to Phoksundu Lake (3620m) (max. 4hrs)

Day 13 exposes less climbing and more greenery landscape. The trace to Phoksundo cascade high above the river passes through the junipers, thorny shrubs, and grassy land. Turns to up the hill that is a viewpoint of river, villages, and waterfalls. From here walk down to a waterfall, across the valley, chortens, and the village of Ringmo. The next stage is blue, calm under the sky surrounded by greenery shrubs, cliffs and plants are Phoksundo Lake.

Day 14: Explore Phoksundo Lake

We will be busy on this day visiting the lake and Ringmo village which is situated by the lake. The people of the village are almost identical to the Tibetan and they have very deep-rooted in both Buddhist religion and Bon congregation. Customary houses with prayer flags on each house. Small village amidst many stupas, chorten, and gompas even single hill is left without chorten. The other main attraction is the lake which lies down in turquoise color it seems to be competition in the blue color with the sky. The lake is believed as a holy lake by the local people so they worship it on a special occasion. One side of the lake has a series of chortens are festooned with colorful Buddhist prayer flags. The blue lake remains in calm and quiet in a steady position at the lower bed of the surrounding cliffs. Observing the lake closely, snapping with different directions and sensing with foot and hands.

Day 15: Phoksundo Lake to Chepka (2670m) (6-7hrs)

Today’s destination camping is to Chepka. The trail to Chepka dips and rises through the charming green forest of cedar, pine, maple, birch, and walnut. The pleasant trail offers Tibetan villages and their living style and culture. To reach Chepka, on the way streams, villages, a beautiful waterfall, and Bheri River are encountered. Finally at Chepka village which has a cluster of houses with lodges and tea shops.

Day 16: Chepka to Dunai (2150m) (max. 4hrs)

Today is the last day of Phoksundo Lake trek. The admirable scenery, rich in a forest of walnut and maple leads to the south direction. We present our permit at the check post as an exit from the national park. Beyond the post walking on the bank of Bheri River is crossed by the bridge and then a short uphill walking to Dunai. This evening will be celebrated as a last and successful trekking day with all our crew members.
