The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a protected area in the Terai of Nepal 175 km of wetlands covering three districts Saptari Udaypur and Sunsari.

To the south Koshi barrage, extended the huge area of marshes with reed beds flood plain of the biggest river of Nepal Sapta Koshi River. Koshi Tappu was eastablished in 1976 and it stands elevation from 75m to 81m sea level. Sapta Koshi means seven big rivers tributaries are Tamor, Arun, Bhotekoshi, Tamakoshi, Sunkoshi, Dudhkoshi, and Indrawati these seven rivers join into one is Saptakoshi. The reserve has occupied marshes, grassy land, and forest so it is safe to a homeland and thrive for all animals, birds, and reptiles. Migrated birds from Siberia to avoid winter and from Sri-Lanka avoid the spring choose the Preserve.

Koshi Tappu has the biggest number of wild animal is wild water buffalo. Other large numbers of mammals are found grazing freely inside the grassy land and sometimes heavy rain and flood cause animals and land. The area of water courses 200 species of fish, and different toads, frogs, snakes, and crocodiles. Once Dolphin also appeared in Sapta Koshi River. Koshi Tappu course various types of wildlife are hog deer, wild water buffalo, wild boar, jackal, spotted deer, smooth-coated otter, and blue bull. Except these there are 485 species of birds can be seen which are among them some often witness birds are the eagle, vulture, water cock, dusky eagle owl stork, crane, grassbird, babbler dove and many more other birds. Bengal Floricans was rare to see them.

To access Koshi Tappu daily flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar to drive 2 hours to the Preserve. The buses run from Kathmandu to Lauki on the highway to Biratnagar and Dharan. It is about 347km away from Kathmandu, 8-9 hours driving. During your stay in Koshi Tappu, there are many resorts and wild Camps which serve with hygienic accommodation.

Outline Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrive at Koshi Tappu Camp
  • Day 2: Early morning nature walk and full-day safari after breakfast
  • Day 3: Early morning bird watching and departure after breakfast

Day 01: Arrive at Koshi Tappu Camp

1 pm - Lunch
3 pm - Birdwatching around Saptakoshi River on foot
7 pm - Dinner

Day 2: Early morning nature walk and full-day safari after breakfast

5:30 am - Wakeup call
6 am - Morning nature walk in the vicinity
8 am - Breakfast
9 am - 6 pm: Raft boat on the upper part of Sapta Koshi River with naturalist to view some of the water birds, water buffaloes, dolphins and various water habitats. End boat trip by the abnk of river and have picnic lunch. Short drive to the Koshi Barrage to view some bird life and fresh water dolphins. Late afternoon return to the camp. (Please note: Koshi Barrage and surrounding area is wide and everyday guests will be taken to different areas).
7 pm: Dinner

Day 3: Early morning bird watching and departure after breakfast

5:30 am - Wakeup call
6 am: More bird watching in the nearby jungle
8 am: Breakfast
9 am: Transfer from Koshi Tappu
